The name

In Gothenburg, anything good is gôtt.

Gotter is an old Swedish word for candy. Gothenburg dialect does the rest: come in and tjôta for a bit, take home a bag of something gôrgott, that is la why you came into town. Hover over the words, or tap them.

The shop

Two errands, one door

Kungs Gotter is two shops that happen to share a door. One sells Sweden: Dala horses, moose, fridge magnets, blue and yellow shirts and tote bags. The other sells gotter, which is what people say here instead of the standard Swedish godis. Visitors and neighbours meet at the same till.

It is tight, it is full, and that is the point. The shelves reach the ceiling and it takes a while before you have seen everything. The red carpet runs from the street in through the door.

We stopped counting

Gothenburg, Sweden, moose, viking ships, Dala horses and little red cottages. The rack stands just inside the door, and choosing takes longer than paying.
